2018-03-30

The list of top PCT applicants in 2017 was released yesterday and Shenzhen-based enterprises occupied the top two spots on the list. According to data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Shenzhen-based HUAWEI and ZTE Corporation are at the top of 10 PCT applicants worldwide, ranking first and second respectively. This indicates that Shenzhen’s innovation level ranks among the top in the world.

HUAWEI and ZTE have ranked at the top alternately for three consecutive years

Shenzhen-based enterprises have occupied the top two spots on the list of international PCT applicants for three consecutive years, HUAWEI and ZTE ranked the top alternately every year. According to the list released by WIPO, Shenzhen-based HUAWEI and ZTE had the largest amount of PCT applications in the world in 2017. In 2016, ZTE ranked first and HUAWEI ranked second. In 2015, HUAWEI ranked first and ZTE ranked second.

HUAWEI and ZTE have been leading players in the world's patent field for 5 consecutive years and have ranked among the top three PCT applicants since 2013.

These two Shenzhen-based enterprises have surpassed global R&D giants such as Intel and Qualcomm in the patent field, with extremely high quality. Their rapid rise is attributed to accumulated strength.

As of December 31, 2017, HUAWEI had filed 64,091 patent applications in China and 48,758 patent applications overseas. They were granted 74,307 authorized patents, 90% of which were invention patents. HUAWEI has more than 180,000 employees worldwide, and more than 80,000 R&D personnel. WIPO said that HUAWEI has about 10% of all patents in the future 5G field.

According to the World Top 2500 R&D Investors 2017 released by the European Commission, HUAWEI has surpassed Apple (9.5 billion euros) with 10.4 billion euros, to rank sixth in the world, first in China, and be a crowning achievement for Chinese enterprises.

The Annual Report for Patent Activity in 2017 released by the European Patent Office (EPO) stated that HUAWEI submitted the largest number of patent applications in 2017. It surpassed SIEMENS, Samsung, Apple and other giants again, and became the first Chinese enterprise to the largest number of patent applications.

ZTE has always adhered to the independent innovation of core technology and strengthened R&D investment. In 2017, ZTE invested RMB 12.96 billion in R&D, accounting for 11.9% of its revenue. As of December 31, 2017, ZTE had obtained more than 69,000 global patents, and more than 30,000 authorized patents, including 1,700 patents in 5G strategic layout.

ZTE has strikingly innovative patents in the technology field. QUESTEL, an internationally renowned patent search agency, reported that ZTEIC’s chip patent strength ranks at the top in China, and ZTEIC is a Chinese enterprise with the largest number of patents. ZTE has invested 10% of its revenue into R&D for many years, with R&D investment ranking the top among A-share listed companies. As a Chinese listed company with the largest number of R&D personnel, it has about 30,000 technical and R&D personnel, and 220 research and development centers in the United States, France, Sweden, India and other places.

Shenzhen has more innovation ability than Silicon Valley

Shenzhen-based enterprises have ranked at the top of the list for PCT applicants for many years and it indicates that Shenzhen's innovation ability has continuously improved. WIPO statistics suggest that Shenzhen ranks second among innovative cities in the world. By the end of 2016, Shenzhen had 69,347 PCT patents, surpassing the world's leading tech cities such as Silicon Valley, Seoul, Paris, New York, London, Frankfurt, etc.

Shenzhen's innovation ability is not a flash in the pan, but grows steadily. From 2007 to 2016, only Shenzhen and Tokyo had steady growth in the number of PCT applications during these years. Silicon Valley showed a decline after 2013 and only slightly rebound after 2016. In terms of the average growth rate of 5 years from 2011 to 2016, the average growth rate of Shenzhen is up to 17.79%, far exceeding that of Tokyo, Silicon Valley and Seoul.

Tech expert Mai Haochao argued that the data above indicates that Shenzhen has a strong innovation base, and Shenzhen-based enterprises have strong innovation ability and a strong awareness of overseas patent layout. In addition to HUAWEI and ZTE, other Shenzhen-based enterprises such as Tencent, DJI and BYD also have world-leading research and innovation ability.
