Shenzhen Most Attractive Chinese City in 2017

2018-01-29

Today, map.baidu.com issued a research report on Chinese cities for the fourth quarter and all of 2017. By exploring and evaluating map.baidu.com’s information on location and travel, the report provided data on 60 Chinese cities, including appeal to population, congestion and its resulting economic losses, and travel distances.

The report had three parts, namely, city vitality, city congestion, and city sharing. It used indexes that track appeal to people and congestion during rush hours as key indicators for its rankings and drawing comparisons between mean new resident populations and resident populations of all Chinese cities, and between travel times during rush hours and travel times during smooth traffic flow to identify development trends.

The top 10 cities in the attraction ranking were all in four city clusters, namely, the Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta, Chengdu and Chongqing, and Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei. Shenzhen ranked No. 1, followed by Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai and Dongguan. Of the top 10 cities, seven were provincial capitals and municipalities directly under the central government. Except for Suzhou, the other two non-capital cities were in the Pearl River Delta. That means the Pearl River Delta, led by Guangzhou and Shenzhen, has become one of the the most vital industrial clusters in China and indeed the world.

On floating population, all cities saw their floating populations come from neighboring cities. For example, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Beijing and Shanghai saw their new resident populations mainly come from Dongguan, Shenzhen, Baoding and Suzhou, respectively.
